In the Hokuriku area, remains from the late to the end of the Jōmon period (approx. 4,000–2,000 years ago) include wood circles. These remains consist of 6–12 pillars cut in half that have been arranged in circles and ellipses. Some hypothesize that they were buildings while others think they were rows of pillars without a roof. Famous examples are the Chikamori site in Kanazawa City and the Mawaki site in Noto Town in Ishikawa Prefecture.
