Sugae Masumi wrote in his Excursions in Oga: “After the long slope, we reach Sugatami Well. If the water mirror is unclear and does not reflect the true form of the person looking down to it, it is a prophecy that his/her life will be short.” Suzuki Shigetaka wrote in his Kinubrui: “This is a round well a little more than 3 shaku (90 cm) wide, which was blessed by the great Buddhist master Kobo Daishi (774–835). It is said that one’s failure to see his/her own face in the well means his/her death within three years. Hikers wash their mouths with the water from the well.
