The war disaster situation of Akita City

“From 1935 to 1945, when the demand of the military was growing every year, the Yabase oil field had collected people’s attention nationwide as the number-one oil producing area in Japan, where oil resources were continuously craved. The oil produced in Yabase was refined at the Nippon Oil Corporation Akita Refinery in Tsuchizaki and the Nippon Kogyo Ltd. (the recent Japan Energy Corporation) Refinery in Funakawa.
It was the night of August 14th, 1945 when Tsuchizaki-Minato was suddenly attacked by US military aircrafts. It is said that the bombing began at the same time that the air raid warning was issued, without any precautionary warnings. The US aircraft used were B-29s, and the target of the bombing was the Nippon Oil Corporation Akita Refinery in the Ohama district of Tsuchizaki-Kohoku.
The bombs centered on the Nippon Oil Corporation Refinery, and the full air raid lasted more than four hours; it concluded at 2:39am on August 15th. This air raid not only destroyed the Nippon Oil Corporation Akita Refinery, but also killed and wounded an indeterminate number of people.
The Tsuchizaki air raid is thought to be the last attack by the US military before the end of war.”
