Its name literally means a red timber fish (\u201cpira\u201d for fish and \u201curuku\u201d for red timber) in the local Indian language. Its delicious flavor and relatively easy preservation has led to its overfishing; this, along with environmental degradation, has resulted in a gradual decline in numbers.
