The modern town of Gojome started as the village of Goshume in 1889 and changed its name to Gojome when it was upgraded to a town in 1986. In 1955 it was merged with four surrounding villages (Uchimur, Okawa, Babame and Futsunai). It is famous for the morning market which started in 1495.
